Between the autumn half-term and the festive season, the guest room comes back into use. Often small, sometimes doubling as a study, it needs to be calm, bright and practical. Pearl grey and off-white suit it well, with a hint of walnut for warmth.
Why this pairing suits a guest room
Pearl grey is a light, neutral grey, softer than white. Off-white brightens a room without the chill of pure white. Together they make a soothing backdrop that suits most people, which is exactly what you want in a room where guests sleep whose tastes you may not know.
The simplest split: pearl grey on the bed (headboard, frame or bedding), off-white on the walls and smaller pieces, and dark wood in small touches. Aim for roughly two thirds light tones, one third pearl grey, and keep walnut for one or two objects.
The mix stays bright even on a grey November afternoon, and it doesn't date: you can swap the throw or cushions each season without starting again.
The bed: pearl grey takes centre stage
In a guest room, the bed takes up most of the space. An upholstered pearl grey model instantly looks comfortable.
- For a room that is also a study, a trundle bed saves space: this light grey trundle bed with upholstered head and footboard (90 × 190 cm) pulls out to sleep two and tucks back into a single bed for the rest of the year.
- For a proper bedroom, a 140 × 190 cm double is enough for most visiting couples. This grey corduroy bed frame, with a wooden slatted base, adds the soft texture of corduroy.
- If you are keeping your current bed, a headboard alone changes the look of the room. This height-adjustable grey button-tufted headboard (140 cm wide) adapts to different mattress heights.
Leave at least 60 cm of clearance on one side of the bed, ideally both, so guests can get up without climbing over each other. More models are gathered in pearl grey beds.

Off-white bedside tables and storage
Guests need three things: somewhere to put a phone and a glass of water at night, a place to hang a few clothes, and room for a suitcase. Off-white works well for these small pieces, which blend into the walls and don't crowd a small room.
Wall-mounted bedside tables free up the floor and make cleaning between visits easier. This set of 2 white wall-mounted bedside tables with drawer measures 35 × 32 cm: enough for a lamp and a book. The white and oak version, in the same size, adds a touch of wood. Find more among off-white tables.
For clothes, there's no need for a heavy wardrobe in a room used only a few weeks a year. This cream fabric wardrobe (103 × 43 × 162.5 cm) has a hanging rail and open shelves; this white steel clothes rail, with a shoe rack and hooks, takes up even less space. More ideas in off-white storage units.

A touch of walnut and evening light
A room in grey and white alone can feel a little cool in autumn. Walnut, a dark grained wood, warms it up. One touch is enough: a wooden lamp on a bedside table, a frame, a wall hook. If you have the space, this brown clothes rail with 3 fabric drawers (58.5 cm wide) works as storage and as a warm accent at the same time.
For lighting, plan a lamp on each side of the bed, with a warm light. Cordless lamps are handy in a guest room: you can put them anywhere, without depending on sockets. This grey cordless bedside lamp, rechargeable via USB-C, stays within the palette; this white ceramic lamp with a linen shade brings a softer texture. For wood, see walnut lamps.

Three small touches that make the difference
- An armchair or a chair. A seat in a corner is somewhere to drop a bag, get dressed or read. A simple pearl grey armchair stays discreet.
- Layered textiles. A pearl grey throw over off-white bedding, two pillows per person: the bed looks more inviting, and guests can adjust the warmth themselves.
- Some free space. Empty a drawer and a shelf, and leave a spot on the floor for the suitcase. It's often what's missing most.
Walnut warms up the living room too: we paired it with green in our sage green and walnut living room. For more ideas, browse our pearl grey bedroom and off-white bedroom pages.
